Out novel natsuo kirino7/8/2023 I personally like this but it's definitely not for everyone. It is also somewhat graphic for those of you with a timid stomach. As described in the notes for this book it has some very very "pitch-black" humor. I've never listened this narrator before and thought she was a bit heavy handed in her portrayal of the older women giving them an unpleasant whining tone to them. Some characters were better developed and easier to listen to than others. I'm not very familiar with Japanese names and had a hard time at the beginning deciphering one name from another. I think actually reading the names of the characters would be a little bit easier to keep track of them. This was the first Japanese book I've ever listened to. Here's some thoughts for those of you wanting to know if this was worth the listen. I saw on the website that this book was for fans of "Gone Girl", so I used a credit.

The unlikely journey of harold fry7/8/2023 As a result of this conversation, Harold becomes convinced that he can save his dying friend simply by believing he can. Harold meets a girl along the way who tells him that her aunt had cancer, and that faith got her aunt through the difficult times. He writes her a response, and decides to walk to the nearest mailbox to send his letter. She is dying from cancer, and writes Harold to say goodbye. One day, he receives a letter from someone he worked with many years ago. Very little about his life changes on a daily basis, except his waistline (it gets bigger) and his hair (it gets thinner). He is recently retired, and has become very bored with retirement. I selected this title for a book club that I recently started for those age 50 and over, and I thought the group members would enjoy the main character, Harold Fry of Kingsbridge, England. If you are looking for an uplifting book with a few twists along the way, consider reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry By: Rachel Joyce

13 secrets michelle harrison7/8/2023 This debut novel won the Waterstone Children’s Book Prize, and a sequel appeared in the United Kingdom in January 2010. And what is the meaning of the 13 charms on the heirloom bracelet? In spite of some awkward writing and weak character development, there is much to enjoy here for the fan of English fantasies involving old manor houses, fairy kingdoms and changelings. Then the sounds Tanya hears in the walls behind her room turn out to be another teenager with second sight, one who has been stealing, or perhaps rescuing, babies. It takes a while for all the facets of this mystery to be displayed, but by the time Tanya realizes that the “ghost” she and Fabian saw in the woods is the same young woman Fabian’s grandfather was suspected of murdering, the reader will be hooked. Packed off to her unwelcoming grandmother’s house, 13-year-old Tanya faces an unpleasant summer, tormented by fairies only she can see and urged by Fabian, the groundskeeper’s son, to explore the forbidden woods to solve the mystery of a child’s disappearance.

In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Barefoot in Paris by Ina Garten7/7/2023 Her experience at Barefoot Contessa has given her hundreds of ideas for creating wonderful parties in a few hours. Ina says that before she owned a specialty food store she often spent a week making dinner for six friends. Now these and other famous Barefoot Contessa recipes can be prepared at home. The light and flaky Maple Oatmeal Scones are baked with rolled oats, whole wheat, and real maple syrup. Meat loaf is as good as your grandmother’s, but it’s healthier because it’s made with ground turkey and fresh herbs. Tomato soup is created from oven roasted tomatoes and fresh basil to intensify the flavors. Her Pan Fried Onion Dip is the real thing, with slowly car amelized onions and fresh sour cream. Ina’s most popular recipes use familiar ingredients, but they taste even better than you would expect. Finally, the energy and style that make Barefoot Contessa such a special place are shown here, with dozens of recipes and more than 160 breathtaking photographs, in The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. For many of those years, people have tried to get the exuberant owner, Ina Garten, to share the secrets of her store. For more than twenty years, Barefoot Contessa, the acclaimed specialty food store, has been cooking and baking extraordinary dishes for enthusiastic customers in the Hamptons. |
